Landskroon Review:
January 16th – LANDSKROON WINES
Assistant Winemaker: Dani Brown
Another Year, another evening enjoying wine
It seemed that after taking a month’s break from our little soirées, the wine-enjoying guests were champing at the bit, eager to sample vinous delights! Janu-worry didn’t get a look-in, as we worked our way through eight of Landskroon’s remarkably affordable wines, which punched well above their weight in terms of value for money. An inspirational choice for those of us for whom January seems to last about 14 weeks!
It was good to see many of the familiar faces from the previous gatherings in 2019, and many new faces, who generally commented “why didn’t we know about these evenings before?” I think there will be many new “regulars” adding to the fun in the coming months.
But what of the wines? We welcomed Dani Brown, the young assistant winemaker from Landskroon, who expertly guided us through the range of wines. Starting with a crisp and fresh Sauvignon Blanc on arrival, we moved through the fruity Chenin, creamy Chardonnay, and alighted on the Blanc de Noir, a wonderful pale onion-skin rosé made from Pinotage grapes. From there, we headed into the Paul de Villiers flagship wines: the barrel-matured Chenin Blanc; a quick return to the rich and fruity Estate Merlot, then on to the full and spicy Paul de Villiers Shiraz and the silky-smooth, big-hitting Cabernet Sauvignon. At only R130 per bottle for these premium wines, value for money was guaranteed.
Special Mention to Bob, Chuck and Ken – three winemakers from New Hampshire, who happened to be on a wine-tasting tour of The Cape. They make “fruit wine” in the same way that “grape” wine is made. They were made very welcome, and we think they enjoyed the evening…We’re going to try to get them to come back soon, and present their own wines to us!
For the entertainment factor, we picked up where we left off at the end of last year. Our monthly tasting evenings at Mountain Manor are filled with fun, and everybody who enjoys wine is invited. Book early for the next tasting on 13 February – come join in the fun!
