“Botanical name: Clivia Miniata is a clump-forming perennial with deep green, shiny, strap-shaped leaves which arise from a fleshy underground stem. The flowering heads of brilliant orange trumpet-shaped flowers appear mainly in spring, but also randomly throughout the year. The genus Clivia is endemic to Southern Africa, meaning that they do not occur naturally anywhere else in the world!”

The shiny, dark green, long lance-shaped leaves are beautiful, even when the plant is not flowering.”

“Botanical name: Leucospermum Cordifolium. A rounded spreading shrub with a single main stem and horizontally spreading stems, hard green leaves and 1 to 3 large inflorescences borne at the end on the stem. The inflorescences consist of a large number of small flowers. It is the stiff protruding styles of the flowers which are the source of the common name “pincushion” for this genus. Pincushion Protea is a relatively easy shrub to grow in warm climates, often planted on slopes and hills for optimal drainage.”

“Botanical name: Protea Erica. Beautiful Fynbos plants that thrive in Western Cape gardens. There are over 700 species of Ericas, of which at least 50 are ideal for planting in the garden. Indigenous Ericas grow wild and in abundance in the mountains of the Cape.The woody shrubs are recognised by their almost artificial looking, perfectly crafted flowers. Shaped like miniature bells, their curved or puffed up tubes come in all colours except blue. The leaves are tiny and needle-like and arranged in small tufts.”

This area is predominantly winter rainfall coastal and mountainous areas with a Mediterranean climate. Fynbos is known for its exceptional degree of biodiversity, 8,500 fynbos species of the Cape floral kingdom where nearly 6,000 of them are endemic. This land has faced severe threats and still does, but due to the many economic uses conservation efforts are being made to help restore it.”

Honeysuckle Room

“Botanical name: Cape honeysuckle. A fast growing, scrambling, multi-stemmed shrub which may grow up to 2-3 m high and spread more than 2.5 m. It is an evergreen plant in warm regions but loses its leaves in colder ones. Flowers are tubular in showy many-flowered heads and vary in colour from red, deep orange, yellow to salmon. It has pinnately compound, glossy leaves that have oval leaflets with blunt teeth. Flowering time for this shrub is very erratic and it often flowers all year round.”
