Winemaker: Marius Malan

It’s all about the balance, Baby.

It’s a common misconception among wine drinkers that in order to produce the best wines, you have to own a wine estate. This couldn’t be further from the truth, as Marius Malan showed us during his visit to Mountain Manor on 14th March. Marius is a highly respected Cape Wine Master, and chooses not to burden himself financially with the high overheads associated with owning a wine estate, instead opting to buy his grapes from selected growers, renting cellar space, and making some of the finest wines that you will ever taste. His low overheads mean that his wines are not only of the highest quality, but they are affordable to all.

When it comes to making wine, his one-word mantra is “BALANCE.” For example, many people expect the wood to overpower the fruit when drinking a barrel-matured Chardonnay or Chenin Blanc, but in the case of the Malanot Chardonnay and “ASIEL” Chenin Blanc, the wood, fruit and acidity are all in perfect balance – these are wines that have been carefully crafted and are widely appreciated.

Marius entertained us with a few inside details about the wine industry – if you weren’t there, we couldn’t possibly comment further – and the assembled guests were captivated with the range of wines and their terrific value for money.
